The ‘Queen of Villas’ is a national monument. Sitting on a hill just a few kilometres from the lively market town of San Casciano, this impressive estate dominates the surrounding countryside, enjoying sweeping views over its formal gardens, parkland, vineyards and olive groves and beyond towards Chianti.
Owned by many of the most illustrious and important Tuscan noble families over the centuries including the Machiavelli, Corsini, Strozzi, Antinori and Capponi, it has been visited by Popes and Tsars.
Recently restored to its former glory, this is one of the largest and most elegant villas in Tuscany. Built in the 1600s but with records dating back to 1427, the villa is beautifully majestic and at the same time liveable and luxuriously comfortable.
A formidable cypress-lined drive climbs up from the ornate entrance gate to the front façade of the villa, topped by centurion-like statues of the four seasons; a theme used again on the inside of the villa.
The villa is a large, symmetrical structure with lateral wings added in the 17th century forming a u-shape around an 18th century, formal Italian garden that hosts a wonderful selection of roses, lemon trees and herbs set on a geometrically designed terrace with fountains, hedges, fruit trees and perfect paths.
The paintings, tromp l’oeils and frescos are mostly works of Pier Dandini, added at the end of the 17th century.
There are several impressive rooms of large dimensions such as the coach house, currently used for wine tasting events and the Limonaia overlooking the garden and above it the room for drying the grapes for Vinsanto.
Below the gardens is a lower terrace with an elegant swimming pool in pietra serena surrounded by olive trees.
A separate wine cellar, built in 2004/5 and with a separate entrance from below the villa through the olive groves, provides ca. 650 sqm for the production of the estate’s various wines and brandy.
A Renaissance chapel, restored by the architect Lorenzo Merlini in a Baroque style and incorporated into the main villa, houses the coats of arms of the Machiavelli and Guicciardini families.
Land – 41 Ha of which 24 Chianti Classico vineyards and 6 Ha of olive groves with 2500 trees.
The estate will receive organic certification in 2020
